📍 Penderyn, Brecon Beacons (Bannau Brycheiniog), South Wales
Penderyn is the first Welsh whisky distillery in over a century and is considered a pioneer of modern "new world" whisky from Wales.
🕰️ History and Heritage
Established in 1998 by a group of enthusiasts under the Welsh Whisky Company; production started in 2000. On St. David's Day (March 1st) 2004, the first whisky was launched in the presence of Prince Charles the first Welsh single malt in over a hundred years. The village of Penderyn was chosen for its own source of pure spring water.
⚗️ Production and Philosophy
Penderyn distills with a unique copper single-pot still (the "Faraday still"), designed by Dr. David Faraday, a descendant of Michael Faraday. The still distills at an exceptionally high 92%, which ensures a light, fruity, and aromatic spirit. Maturation almost always takes place in two cask types: first ex-bourbon and then a finish in, for example, Madeira.
🍯 Flavor Profile and Style
Light-footed, fresh, and aromatic with notes of vanilla, ripe fruit, citrus, and a creamy sweetness; finishes (Madeira, sherry, wine casks) add extra depth.
🌟 Special Bottlings
The Madeira finish (flagship), Sherrywood, Peated, and the prestigious "Icons of Wales" series such as The Village.
