This Balmenach 40 Years Old from the prestigious Old & Rare – Platinum Selection of Hunter Laing is a bottling for lovers of truly old Speyside whisky. Distilled in 1979 and bottled in 2019 after 40 years of maturation, resulting in that typical “old-school” complexity: layers of dried fruit, waxy elegance, spices, nuttiness and the refined bitterness of long wood contact (think tobacco, cocoa, and polished oak).
Balmenach is known for a robust, sometimes slightly “rugged” spirit, and at this age, it is beautifully rounded: rich and layered, but with a classic dry structure that you primarily find in very old single casks. Bottled as a single cask, at natural cask strength and traditionally un-chill filtered — exactly how you want it with this calibre of whisky.
