Lowlands

South of the Highland Line, the Lowlands have long made Scotland’s gentlest malt. Lighter in body, often triple distilled, with grass, citrus, blossom and a dry, elegant finish — whisky for the table rather than the campfire.

Dozens of distilleries once stood here; industrialisation and a taste for heavier malts left only a handful, with Auchentoshan, Glenkinchie and Bladnoch among the survivors. The region is returning: new stills, experimental barley, and a renewed appetite for delicate spirit.

Lowland whisky isn’t a lighter version of Scotland. It’s its own voice: clear, floral, and surprisingly long if you give it time.
